The Duddingston Primary Parent Council provides an opportunity for parents/carers to make their voices heard on School activities, decisions and policies, many of which affect families directly. All parents and carers are welcome to attend the meetings which happen at least once every term.
What do we do?
- Hold regular meetings with senior school staff – all welcome!
- Work in groups to support the school in key areas.
- Give feedback to the school on plans, policies and decisions.
- Act as class reps, supporting communication between the school and parents/carers.
- Support the recruitment of senior school staff.

Current Priorities
Road Safety
Our road safety group has raised money for bike sheds, supported the recruitment of lollipop people, worked with the School’s Junior Road Safety Officers, and liaises with with council about the School Streets scheme.
Eco
We have an ECO group, which works with the pupil eco group and has supported the school in getting the Green Flag award. They have also helped organised Eco-day activities with classes.
Extracurricular
We work with Active Schools to support the running of the clubs they offer at Duddingston.
The Scottish Schools Act 2006 gives each school’s community the right to set up a Parent Council. The Parent Council is not run by the school: it is run by the parents and carers or children at the school.
Duddingston Primary Parent Council can have up to 24 members. There are four main roles associated with membership: Class Representatives, Chair, Secretary and Treasurer (see Role descriptions). Other roles may be agreed on a year by year basis. All role-holders have to be part of the Parent Forum: the Parent Forum is the collective name for every parent, carer or guardian at a school.
All members of the Parent Council are required to attend meetings, typically 5 per year.
The Parent Council’s objectives are to:
- Work in partnership with the school to decide on the key priorities to take forward;
- Provide a voice for parents/carers in schools and in their local authority on issues that are important to them;
- Improve the school’s understanding of how to engage parents/carers in their children’s learning and in the life of the school;
- Support the school to develop strong home/school partnerships;
- Communicate regularly with the Parent Forum to both hear their views and keep them informed;
- Support improvement by discussing the school’s strengths and areas for development from a parental perspective;
- Help make links with the wider community;
- Capture the unique and varied skills, interests, knowledge and experience that parents/carers can offer.
